The central problem of the research is the activity of the Catholic church in the processes of the forming of cultural and national identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the middle of the 19th century to 1918. Special attention will be given to the influence of the Catholic church in the Habsburg Monarchy (Austro-Hungary), and especially in Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia on the political, social and cultural development. Activities of particular high-ranking Catholic dignitaries will be analysed in a political and inter-religious sphere, as well as the activity of politically involved clergy, its political conceptions and their representation in political parties. Contemporary Serbo-Croatian relations, Catholic-Orthodoxy problem area and the attepmts of connections between the Catholic and Orthodox church by means of a church union will also be investigated. Concerning Bosnia and Herzegovina, the research will comprise the period before and after the establishment of regular Catholic hierarchy (1881), the analysis of religious and national politics of Austro-Hungarian authorities, the influence of the Franciscans and autochtonous citizenry on one hand and on the other hand the Archbishop Josip Stadler and the circle of his political followers on the national and political constitution of Croats on Bosnia and Herzegovina. The causes of conflicts between those main representatives of religious and political ideas among the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina will also be explored. In the analysis of inter-confessional relations in Bosnia and Herzegovina emphasis will be put on the interweaving of religious and national issues and the contribution of religious institutions (Catholic, Orthodox and Islamic) to the forming of political and cultural identity and the creation of political attitudes of the members of the religious communities respectively.
