Even though a great effort has been made in the last decade and a half to explicate the role of the Catholic Church in Croatian culture and politics, a vast area of research remains to be done, especially in the domain of identity process for the Croatian nation. In that respect, the encounter of the Church and its outstanding individuals with dominant ideologies and its consequences for society and culture during the last two centuries needs a further and protracted research and elaboration. The goal of the proposed research is the attainment of a better presentation of the Church’s role in the encounter of ideologies of liberalism, nationalism, fascism, national-socialism, and capitalism, but also of capitalism and globalization and how that encounter contributed to shaping of Croatian identity. The role of the Church cannot be studied in abstraction of political and cultural processes, so the research on the role of the Church will also be an examination of politics and society in general.
