Department: Odjel za hrvatsku povijest 19. stoljeća
Duration of project: 5 years

The central issue of this research is to tackle the problem of creation and modification of Croatian identity in the 20th century, then to pinpoint the elements which influenced that process and to investigate the way in which complex Croatian identity (national, regional, transnational, class identity) is formed. The project will concentrate on the role of cultural paradigm in the process of identity formation, especially on the relationship between culture and contemporary mass politics. It will follow the intensity of the ideologization of culture in historical periods which were marked by various degrees of political oppression (since during the times of political oppression, culture’s role is that of national integration and political opposition) through three different state-political systems (Austro-Hungary, Kingdom of Yugoslavia and socialist Yugoslavia). Furthermore, the project will explore what was in different periods (ideological systems) considered to be the basis of cultural identity and how traditional culture was ideologically defined; it will also tackle the problem of the authenticity of traditional culture and it will try to compare the way in which ‘Croatian’ issues relate to other European ideologies of ‘cultural nationalism’ (J. Hutchinson). Special attention will be given to cultural practices and to the ways in which ideas were turned into different activities, the attempt will be made at the evaluation of those practices (from individual projects to mass campaigns), while the comparison with other countries will place Croatian solutions into European context and display similarities and differences.
