Program: Politika i moderni identiteti u Hrvatskoj u 19. i 20. stoljeću
Affiliation: Hrvatski institut za povijest
Department: Odjel za povijest 19. stoljeća
Duration of project: 5 years

This project continues ongoing research which has already brought concrete results. During the next five year period researchers will continue to investigate the role played by relevant political parties and groups in Croatian society, indicating their place in political life. The project will emphasize their importance in creating Croatian national identity and their participation in the processes of modernization. Members of the project will research activities on territories which were politically, socially and culturally interdependent from the 1840s, the period when political parties first appeared, until 1929, when the promulgation of King Aleksandar Karađorđević’s dictatorship limited the scope of political parties. Over the course of this whole era, including the discontinuity of the First World War, analysis will be undertaken of the causes and consequences of the key political decisions made by political parties and groups. Likewise, the importance of this research project lies in determining the position of Croatia in the context of multinational communities, its position in the international context, and the creation of its political ties to neighboring nations. The impact of individual foreign political ideas on the thinking of Croatian politicians will also be considered. The project wishes to determine how various changes influenced the development of Croatian politics and the formation of a modern identity. In this regard, research will shed light on the problems that appeared among Croatian political parties and important groups, the way they dealt with crises (social unrest, national strife), and how they related to the advance of modernization and the challenges of modernization. Considering the inveterate position of political parties in modern society, researchers will show how certain parties came into being, how they developed, and how they fragmented and came apart. Research into state right political thought tends toward framing the topic such that project members examine numerous developmental phases of the Party of Right (1861-1929) and show how its ideology related to political and societal changes in the Croatian lands and sphere of influence. In the research of political parties, a similar model will also be applied to the Croat (People’s) Peasant Party (1905-1929) because in this way we can learn about the modern political mobilization of the masses.
