Human losses in Croatia during the Second World and the post-war period are an unavoidable aspect of Croatian contemporary history. A great number of publications about human losses in Croatia in that period have been published in Croatian historiography and related disciplines. A considerable number of them can be taken as a reliable base for further research. Reinterpretation and correction of earlier works, which are often arbitrary and incorrect, are of the utmost importance, particularly in historiography, publicistics and history schoolbooks. What is needed now is a systematic research, critical review and presentation of these, clearly the most important and unavoidable issues and topics in Croatia’s recent history. The project will continue researching the earlier established findings on Croatia’s human losses in the Second World and the post-war period. The issue will be systematically analysed by raising the following new topics: “Partisan and Communist Repression on Civilian Population in Croatia: Camps, Prisons, Forced Labour (1945-1952)” (Vladimir Gajger, Ph.D.), “Land Commission for Establishing the Facts of War Crimes of the Occupier and their Accomplices in Croatia (1944-1947)” (Martina Grahek Ravančić, BA), “Forced and Voluntary Migrations During the Second World War and the Post-War Period (1941-1948)” (Marica Karakaš Obradov, BA). A separate research and technical topic within the project will be “The List of the Casualties of the Second World War and the Post-War Period” (Josip Kolanović, Ph.D.). Archive sources and literature about the victims of the Second World War will be researched within this topic; and the existing lists and databases of casualties will be amended and corrected. The final outcome will be a database of victims of the Second World War and the post-war period, with their personal data, place, time and manner of death, as well as the source of information. Given the large number of victims, reliability of the existing lists and availability of sources, the research will continue the long-lasting research efforts aimed at achieving a reliable and exhaustive inventory of victims of the Second World War and the post-war period. Thus, the precondition for the finalisation of the list of victims of the Second World War and the post-war period will be fulfilled.
