Code of project: 019-0190611-0594
Leading researcher: dr. sc. Tamara Tvrtković

As a part of a program encompassing the entire territory of Croatian Kingdom in the early modern history, as well as approaching the history of Croatia from different perspectives, the project Civil Croatia will focus on the topics related to community, politics, culture, and history. Up to now, the term Civil Croatia has not been studied as a separate historical concept, being only referred to in the general outlines of Croatian history. Key notions of this project are based on the assumption that apart from being contrary to Military Frontier, as previously believed, civil Croatia also consists of a number of specific relations connected to social, political, and cultural history, as well as spirit of times which has no definite space or political boundaries, but contributes to formation of a unique national identity. The project aims to study all kinds of relations on the basis of the unknown and previously unexplored sources (archive documents, manuscripts and less studied printed texts). The political, legal, and socio-economic development of main urban centers and minor towns, and cultural and educational background formed by religious and educational institutions and activities of intellectuals will be studied in more detail. These aims include the study of formation of the idea and awareness of a nation through publications, literature and contemporary historiography, as well as the role of religion and religious institutions in social and cultural relations. The project will define the existence of the identity of the entire Croatian being, regardless of the fact that Croatia was politically divided at the time. The results of the studies will be of interest not only to historians, but also to other scientists and cultural workers, and will significantly contribute to the insight about this period in Croatian history.
