Program: Razjedinjena Hrvatska Kraljevina u europskom civilizacijskom kontekstu 16.-18. st.
Affiliation: Hrvatski institut za povijest
Department: Odjel za novovjekovnu povijest
Duration of project: 5 years

The Military Frontier in Croatia experienced a series of reorganisations from the beginning of the 16th till the second half of the 19th century, which all had very far-reaching effects on its organisational system, as well as on the structure, rights and obligations of its inhabitants. While research activities of project collaborators in the past were mostly directed to the analysis of the Military Frontier as a geopolitical, administrative and military phenomenon of early modern Europe, in the forthcoming period the interest of collaborators will be aimed at the reconstruction and analysis of socio-cultural processes in the same Frontier area. By following the historical development of the Military Frontier from the initial division into captaincies, over the system of regiments, till the final demilitarisation, the Frontier everyday life and mentalities will be explored in the same rigid militarised environment, but in different spatial unities and time spans. The main thesis is that a separate Frontier (or Grenzer) patriotism, which in the course of the 19th century merged with national identity, developed in the Frontier area under the influence of centuries-long socio-cultural integrative processes. Research will be grounded on a comparative analysis of archival and printed primary sources, as well as on the secondary sources, and its results will be published in scholarly publications (journals, proceedings and monographs) and reported in conferences. Participants will continue the practice of discussing results and problems related to their research not only in regular project meetings, but also within the programme framework. Thus, a new way of checking will be secured. Another way will be secured by written and/or oral announcements of research results to a wider scholarly and academic audience. The topic of this project is an unomittable part of the programme related to the fragmented Croatian Kingdom. Its significance, however, is that it represents a final phase in the extensive and successful research of the Military Frontier which began already in 1991. Since then the composition of participants has not significantly changed, and they became scholarly recognisable as specialists for the Military Frontier history. In the end of this project period, and grounded on all past knowledge, a synthesis of the Military Frontier history will be published from its foundation till its demilitarisation and incorporation into Civil Croatia.
